Blanchester’s proposed 1 percent earnings tax expected to have 7-year time frame

BLANCHESTER — An informational flyer making a case for a 1 percent earnings tax was available to the public Thursday at village council’s special meeting.

The wording in the flyer was worked up in a process of writing and rewriting by village council’s Finance Committee, Blanchester Mayor John Carman said after the meeting.

The flyer states the village during the past years “has used its savings just to maintain the services necessary for our community.”

It also indicates a 1 percent earnings tax “will be in line with almost all Ohio cities and neighboring villages.”

During the special meeting, council members said they plan for the term of the proposed tax, if approved by voters at the fall ballot box, to be seven years.

The flyer states, “If the earnings tax does not pass in November, we will be forced to reduce safety services limiting our police department’s ability to function properly.”

If the tax proposal does pass, revenue from it will be used at the least for street and infrastructure repair, maintaining “a fully staffed police force,” and hiring a village administrator who would oversee village operations including those of the Blanchester Board of Public Affairs, according to the flyer.
