Pickup of ‘bulky household items’ in Wilmington must now be scheduled

WILMINGTON — Some change is coming to trash pickup in town.

Wilmington City Council held its second and third readings of ordinances to make amendments to sections of the codified ordinance in regards to refuse collection.

One ordinance is “in order to better define services provided through the Sanitation Department.” This includes ordinances involving container requirement, bulky household item pickups, and dumpsters.

For the container pickup, it states “every person in possession, charge or control of any premises shall be issued a City-furnished container so as to adequately house the residential refuse generated by the dwelling.”

For bulky item pickups, the ordinance states that residents now need to schedule with the Wilmington Sanitation Department to collect “bulky household items” and “will not be collected without prior approval.”

The ordinance also lists the rental fees for short-term dumpster rentals, with a one-time setup fee at $125 and additional collections per occurrence at $70.

The other ordinance is over changes on refuse clean-up including rates for commercial, industrial, and “all apartment residences with a common containerized refuse system and a single common water meter system and a single common water meter system.”
