WILLIAMSBURG – Closing the game on an 11-0 run, Williamsburg defeated East Clinton 55-38 Thursday in SBAAC National Division girls basketball action.
The Lady Astros trailed 30-19 at halftime but pulled within 37-32 after three quarters. It was 44-38 midway through the fourth quarter when the Lady Wildcats went on their scoring spree.
“We did not shoot well from the three-point line,” EC coach Jeff Craycraft said.
East Clinton was 2 for 22 beyond the arc.
“We have to learn when they (three-point shots) are not falling to get the ball to the hoop by driving,” he said.
The loss puts East Clinton at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the SBAAC. Williamsburg leads the loop early on with a 2-0 mark. The Lady Wildcats are 4-0 overall.
Craycraft said his squad competed hard with its half-court defense most of the game, until the final 3:00.
“Williamsburg has excellent shooters and we did locate them in transition,” he said.
Kaitlin Durbin had 12 points, seven rebounds, four blocked shots and two charges taken in the loss.
“Her defensive effort was outstanding,” Craycraft said. “She had four blocks and altered other shots.”
Craycraft said Gracie McCarren came off the EC bench and provided a spark defensively.
“Our team perimeter shooting and driving the ball to the hoop must improve if we are to compete each night,” said Craycraft. “Our base defense is keeping us in games. We need to turn it around quickly as we travel to Blanchester Monday.”
