MOUNT ORAB — Wilmington won two matches Saturday at the Western Brown tri-match.
The Hurricane stormed Franklin 54-21 then saddled the Broncos with a 52-21 defeat.
A trio of WHS wrestlers won two matches on the mat, Thane McCoy at 144, Kaison Dodge at 157 and Thad Stuckey at 165.
Wilmington started the Western Brown match in a 15-0 hole then bullied the Broncos the rest of the way, losing just once.
“We did start in a hole we were not happy with,” WHS coach Kelly Tolliver said. “But we did storm back.”
Tolliver said his Hurricane, though consisting of many veteran wrestlers, still has some things to clean up.
“We expecdt the mistakes we are seeing this early but still do our best to mitigate those,” he said. “This is a season team with very few inexperienced wrestlers, so we have been and will continue to be demanding on this squad.”
The win continues a strong showing for a team with high hopes this season. A “loss” at Edgewood, where WHS was the tournament runnerup, is more than motivating in a sport where individual honors seem more to some programs than team accolades.
“The team really has ‘bought in’ but you are right it is hard to cultivate that attitude,” Tolliver said. “They wanted to win Edgewood and had their sights set on it. It really galvanized the team and they are on a mission.”
