Walt Hobble, a member of the Clinton County Sports Hall of Fame, passed away March 5 in Raleigh, N.C. He was 95.

A resident of Liverpool, N.Y. at the time of his death, Hobble attended school at an early age in the Jefferson School District while his father was coaching and teaching there.

After serving in the United States Army, he returned to Clinton County as he attended Wilmington College.

Hobble played basketball and baseball for the Quakers. As a basketball player, he set the WC men’s basketball career scoring record with 1,339 points. Though the record has since been broken, Hobble remains 8th on the all-time career scoring list for men’s basketball at WC.

In 1993, Hobble was inducted into the Wilmington College Athletic Hall of Fame.

He remained in Clinton County after graduation from WC and became a stalwart in the heyday of fast-pitch softball. When the talk starts about great all-time fast-pitch softball pitchers, Hobble’s name is right up there with the other greats.

Hobble was inducted into the Clinton County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
