Bob Malone has high hopes for his East Clinton girls track and field team this spring.
But because of the success of the girls basketball program at EC, Malone and his fellow coaches won’t know exactly who will be coming out for track and field.
Malone is in his third year as girls head coach. He was an assistant coach three years prior to that. This season, he’ll be assisted by boys coach Michael Fritz, Bob Henson, Josh Simmons, Jayson Edison, Angie Collom, Anthony Joseph and Savanna Davis.
East Clinton finished fourth in the SBAAC National Division last season. Malone expects there to be six returning leterwinners from that team.
Carah Anteck, Jordan Collom, Kaylyn Deaton and Molly Seabaugh were first-team athletes in 2022. Anteck is the only 2022 graduate among the four. Anteck, Collom, Deaton and Seabaugh were part of the school record setting 4×800-meter relay team. Anteck also holds the EC record in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
Other than Anteck, Malone said other top 2022 performers not expected back are Libby Evanshine, Kenton Deaton and Lauren Runyon.
“We have a smaller team this year but we have a lot of young talent,” Malone said. “They are excited and truly love the sport.”
Malone said Williamsburg is the favorite to win the SBAAC National Division title this season.
“Hopefully these younger athletes will continue to work and develop the way that we know they can,” said Malone. “We may not fill every event but we will have our aces in their places and they will be the best they can be in a couple events.
