WILMINGTON — A local high school wrestling coach said he hopes to help the community in his new role on Wilmington City Council.

Kelly Tolliver was recently selected by the Clinton County Republican Party to fill in the vacant Wilmington council seat. Tolliver was formally sworn in on Thursday, Jan. 18 by Wilmington Mayor Pat Haley.

The seat was previously held by Jonathan McKay, who stepped down to accept an appointment as the city transit director.

Tolliver, a self-employed IT professional, has been the head wrestling coach at Wilmington High School for 11 seasons. He told the News Journal he’s “very excited” about this new opportunity.

“I can’t wait to do my part to help the community,” he said, adding this was his first time holding public office. “I’m an approachable person and I speak plainly.”

He advised he knows there will be challenges to the position, but hopes to address concerns he’s noticed in the city. These include cyber security and issues involving the city’s infrastructure. He also wants to help Haley with items he campaigned on prior to his election.

“I’ve seen the mayor’s proposals for the city and I supported him throughout his campaign,” said Tolliver. “I hope to help him with those ideas.”
