HILLSBORO — For the second consecutive game, Wilmington eclipsed the century mark with a 101-32 defeat of the Hillsboro Indians in South Central Ohio League action Friday night.
The Hurricane extends its undefeated record to 7-0 on the season, 6-0 in the league. Hillsboro falls to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the league.
Wilmington scored the first 22 points of the contest, en route to a 24-2 lead at the first quarter break. WHS then outscored Hillsboro in the second quarter, 26-6, taking a 50-8 lead into the locker room.
Jarron Cumberland topped the WHS attack with 34 points, including 21 in the first half of play. This is the fourth game this season Cumberland has reached 30 points in a game.
Nine different players reached the scoring column for WHS. Matt Creditt had 16 points, non-starter Jeffrey Mansfield added 13 and Dylan Beaugard scored 10 points.
For Hillsboro, their leading scorer was Blake Kibler with 20 points. The bulk of his came from beyond the three-point arc, as he fired in five treys for the Indians.
“This was a complete effort and we are playing good team basketball right now,” said WHS head coach Mike Nozska. “We’re constantly striving to improve each game; every time we take the floor. Tonight we were better than Tuesday and that’s what I am looking for.”
Two key elements of the performance, in Noszka’s opinion, were taking care of the ball and a team defensive effort that kept the opponent at less than 40 points.
“If we protect the ball and keep turnovers to less than 10 per game, and keep opponents in the 30 point range, that will yield us the results we’re looking for. If we keep performing like this, we will continue to be successful,” he said.
Wilmington turned it over just seven times on the night, while the Indians committed 17 turnovers.
The game also marked the return to the WHS lineup for Alex Miller, who had missed time with an injury. On the first possession, Miller hit the deck, fighting for a loose ball and forced a turnover.
