ADAMS TOWNSHIP — Under an overcast sky Friday, Clinton-Massie upperclassmen witnessed a dramatic re-enactment of a fatal collision, accentuated by sirens and emergency lights.
With prom on Saturday and graduation parties coming soon, the point of the mock crash was that the roads out there are dangerous, and are made even more so by drinking, speeding, not wearing safety belts or texting behind the wheel.
It was the first mock crash on Clinton-Massie’s Lebanon Road campus since 2009, said Christel Wissman, the junior class’ head advisor.
The accident scene was peopled by student and adult volunteers, including first responders based in the school district.
Afterward, there was a talk from Laura Seger, whose young son Joey died several years ago in a two-vehicle crash that broke his neck. The driver of the other vehicle was under the influence, and died three months later from an overdose, related Seger.
“I will forever be a grieving mother,” Seger told the assembled seniors and juniors.
Prior to the portrayal of the immediate aftermath of a deadly crash, the students were asked to take a few seconds to remember someone they know who was seriously injured or killed while riding in a vehicle.
The brief sounds of a crash started the story, with a narrator stressing certain things about the unfolding drama. She noted that a driver who causes a fatal wreck “will have to live with the consequences of killing someone the rest of their life.”
