BATAVIA – The sign welcoming Batavia to the field Friday read “2017 The Year The falcons Went extinct.” The only thing snuffed out was any chance the Bulldogs had of beating Clinton-Massie … early.
The Falcons scored 44 seconds into the game, just two plays after Batavia fumbled on its first play. Then it was a Luke Richardson’s 45-yard pick six five minutes later. Then it was a 56-yard Garrett Trampler punt return for TD two minutes after that. And finally, another two minutes later, a one-play drive where Corey Stulz hit Richardson in stride for 70-yard touchdown where he coasted to paydirt.
When the clock finally hit 0:00 on the first quarter clock, Massie led 27-0 and had just three offensive plays.
The Falcons would go on to mark its triumphant return to the Southern Buckeye Athletic & Academic Conference and spoil Batavia’s homecoming with a 62-0 victory.
Christian Poynter, who notched Massie’s first score, reached the end zone again 9:32 before the intermission to virtually guarantee a second-half running clock and twice more before the break to ensure it.
Clinton-Massie’s offensive starters took off the second half. The Falcons subs picked up where the starters left off, marching down the field for scores on both second-half drives.
Batavia (4-2) never crossed midfield and only had 20 yards of total offense.
No conference foe – South Central Ohio League or SBAAC – has upended Massie (6-0) in the last 13 conference openers or the last 60 games overall.
