CM grad Hughes leads WC women at OAC meet

HARTVILLE – The Wilmington College women’s cross country team finished eighth Saturday at the 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Cross Country Championships at Sable Creek Golf Course.

The Fightin’ Quakers finished with 249 points, 19 ahead of Capital University. Otterbein University won the OAC championship with 59 points.

Katie Hughes, a Clinton-Massie graduate, was the top Wilmington finisher, placing 45th on the six-kilometer course in 25:42.6. Savannah Rhodes, a Blanchester graduate, was the next Quaker to finish, crossing the line in 53rd place with a time of 26:02.7.

Wilmington rounded out its top five with with the trio of Quakers – BHS grad McKenzie Hamm (28:53.1), Kelly Rice (29:08.0) and Kendra Stahl (29:17.3).

“Today’s conditions were tough, but Katie [Hughes] and Savannah [Rhodes] both ran well as freshmen,” said WC head coach Ron Combs. “I’m excited to see what our young group of women can do going forward.”

Claire Lamb of Otterbein claimed her third consecutive OAC individual title, running the 6K course in 22:05.1.

Wilmington has a week off before competing in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Nov. 10.
