PAWS new local humane society

The former all-volunteer non-profit humane society on U.S. 68 has apparently re-organized and re-opened under the name PAWS Humane Society Inc.

WAHS had announced in a letter to volunteers in early December that it would no longer be taking in pets and housing animals at the shelter beginning in January, and that “WAHS will be moving in a new direction starting January 2020. We will no longer be taking in pets and housing animals at a shelter.”

A letter emailed last week to former Wilmington Area Humane Society (WAHS) volunteers obtained by the News Journal stated:

“The shelter is being operated now under the name of PAWS Humane Society, Inc. Please understand that this change in shelter management has happened quickly and it was not something anticipated or planned for months or years ago, so while there may be some ‘bumps’ in the road initially, we’re hoping the end result will be good for the animals and for you. It’s both the hope and need that you and all other volunteers will continue to help with the animals and the shelter.

“The immediate goal is to continue to find homes for the animals that we’ve been caring for and then start to do a major cleaning and disinfection of the areas in the future. A manager for the shelter is being sought and it should be happening fairly soon. …

“We hope to have a get together of volunteers in the near future plus send out news more frequently. If you have suggestions, questions, please shoot an email to pawshumanesocietyinc@gmail.com .”

Calls and emails to current PAWS/former WAHS staff from the News Journal beginning last Thursday have not been returned as of late Monday afternoon.

The emailed letter also stated that PAWS plans an adoption event 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12 at the shelter.

The WAHS all-volunteer non-profit 501(c)3 no-kill animal shelter had opened its then-new facility at 5312 N. U.S. 68 in fall 2016, after a donation for its construction from the Roberts Family of R+L Carriers, and fundraising and donations.

The other longtime (since 2003) local all-volunteer, no-kill, non-profit animal shelter is the Clinton County Humane Society at 1760 Fife Ave., Wilmington. Its website is clintoncohumanesociety.org .
