OSHP Wilmington: One dead in Highland Co. crash

HIGHLAND COUNTY — The Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash that occurred Friday morning on SR 138 near milepost 12 in New Market Township.

At approximately 8:26 a.m., a 2016 Dodge Charger was eastbound on SR138 near milepost 12 when the vehicle went off of the right side of the road and struck a drainage pipe under the driveway of a residence. The Dodge then continued through the yard of the residence and into a creek bed, striking an embankment and catching fire after landing in the creek, according to the OSHP.

The driver of the Dodge, Robert D. Newkirk, 55, of Hillsboro, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Highland County Coroner,the OSHP stated.

It is unknown if a seatbelt was in use at the time of the crash. No alcohol or drugs are suspected.

The crash remains under investigation.
