Gaining real-world experience is a critical part of preparing for a career. Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) of Wilmington provides that experience through internships, and several students in the Aviation Maintenance program at Laurel Oaks Career Campus were honored as ATSG summer interns last week.
The Laurel Oaks high school students are preparing for FAA certifications to maintain and repair aircraft.
Laurel Oaks students interned at AMES, a division of Air Transport Service Group. They are:
• James Orchard of East Clinton, who worked in the wheel shop handling, breaking down, and cleaning wheels for planes being repaired or serviced.
• Dakota Abney of Blanchester, who worked in shipping and recovery. He intends to earn additional FAA certifications after graduating from high school and hopes to continue working at AMES.
• Maddie Pembleton of Blanchester, who worked in several departments. She has already completed the requirements to earn additional FAA certifications, and will be attending Wright State University to begin studying mechanical engineering during her high school senior year.
• Hanna Purcell of Lynchburg-Clay. She talked about her time in the inventory department. “We handled materials as large as sheet metal for aircraft wings of flooring for cargo planes to very small precision parts that cost thousands of dollars.”
The students were among 35 high school and college students interning at ATSG this summer.
Adult classes set for fall

Seven-week classes at Great Oaks campuses offer the chance to develop skills for work or fun.
