Wilmington High School students in the football program visited Holmes Elementary School to connect and give back to the youth in the Wilmington Schools.
WHS students participated with kindergarten students learning about their letters and sounds. According to WHS head football coach, Mr. Evans,“We want our young men to be able to be effective leaders in our community. With so much negativity in the world today, this is one way we as the Wilmington Hurricane Football Team can show positivity in our community, and be the change that we want to see.”
This mentoring program will be an ongoing project that is intended to promote academic excellence in the classroom. Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Brandy Smith shared, “I love this idea of having high school role models like these wonderful young men to interact with our youngest learners. It provides a great way to build community throughout the school buildings and gives my students someone to look up to. It also gives our students an insight into what football and other sports are all about.”
