The sixth annual LCpl Brett Wightman Memorial 5K Run and Kids Fun Run was held Saturday morning when temperatures were crisp and the sky sunny. All proceeds from the fundraising event in Sabina go to the Brett Wightman Foundation, and each year scholarships are awarded to two graduating East Clinton seniors. A 2002 East Clinton High School graduate, Wightman lost his life on Aug. 3, 2005 when his amphibious assault vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) south of Haditha, Iraq. He was among 14 Marines killed in the explosion.

There were 94 registrants for the LCpl Brett Wightman Memorial 5K Run held Saturday. Noah Richmond is the overall winner with a time of 18:34. The top female winner is Laura Luttrell at 24:57. Brett Wightman Foundation board member William Saylor said the foundation wants to thank everyone who had a part in the event. Behind the group in the photograph is the R+L Carriers’ trailer that depicts “The Eyes of Freedom: Lima Company Memorial”.
