BW takes down WC men at Berea pool

BEREA — The Wilmington College men’s swimming team open its 2019-20 season with a 120-84 loss at Baldwin Wallace University in a dual meet Saturday afternoon.

The Fightin’ Quakers tallied two first-place finishes, one from sophomore Isak Alin and the other junior Samuel Shanes.

Shanes won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:29.73 while Alin claimed first-place honors in the 100-yard backstroke (55.88 seconds).

Alin also tallied a runner-up finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.74).

Wilmington also had two individuals earn two second-place finishes including Logan Schroer in the 50-yard freestyle (23.62 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (50.98 seconds).

“Logan [Schroer] did some great work this week and made some corrections at practice that really paid off,” WC coach Trip Breen said. “He is already close to his end of season times from last year. I am really happy with the progress he has made.”

Aaron Polk was runnerup in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:31.87) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.22).

Matthew Allen also earned a runner-up place in his first collegiate swim of the 500-yard freestyle (5:26.97).

Wilmington rounded out the meet with its 200-yard freestyle relay team of Schroer, Reed Ashcraft, Sam Wallace and Polk taking second place with a time of 1:37.69.

The Quakers return to action Friday evening for its annual night dual meet with Ohio Northern University. The first event, from the WC Natatorium, is scheduled for 6 p.m.
