WILMINGTON — The Wilmington College men’s soccer team rebounded from a last-minute loss last weekend to defeat Ohio Northern University 1-0 Thursday in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest at Townsend Field.

Shots were even a third of the way through the match as both squads took four shots. ONU’s fifth, however, nearly broke the deadlock in the 36th minute. Zach Yoder found space and fired a shot that beat Wilmington goalkeeper Felix Maurer, but the shot caromed off the crossbar.

The Polar Bears took four shots to the Fightin’ Quakers’ one over the final 10 minutes of the first half, but neither side scored.

The visitors took the first shot of the second half, but it was saved by Maurer. The Quakers pushed the ball forward following the save and earned a penalty kick as ONU committed a foul inside its own 18-yard box. Zach Burgmeier, for the second straight match, stepped up and delivered the penalty kick goal. Wilmington’s defense, along with a six-save performance from Maurer, earned the clean slate victory.

ONU held a 17-10 edge in overall shots including a 7-2 margin in shots on goal.

Wilmington (3-1-0) heads to Marietta College for a match 2 p.m. Sunday.
