East Clinton wrestlers knock off Clermont NE 36-24

LEES CREEK — The East Clinton wrestling team defeated Clermont Northeastern 36-24 Wednesday in a match held in front of the junior high and high school student bodies.

While the purpose of the match is to allow more students to become aware of high school wrestling, one of the results its a nerve-wracking experience for the wrestlers.

“Matt Horn, a freshman, first year wrestler … the first match of the day, he was nervous,” said EC coach Doug Stehlin. “Wrestlers don’t get that kind of atmosphere. Our student body did a good job. We wanted them to get loud, get crazy on the last day before Christmas break, have some fun. I was proud of our student body.”

Four of the matches on the mat didn’t make it out of the first period, with three pins and an injury default.

EC’s 132-pound Austin Brock looked strong in a 1:56 pin. Thomas Wright at 160, DJ Perry at 182 and Christian Stone at 220 all posted second period pins for EC.

A total of 185 canned goods were collected during the week at East Clinton, Stehlin said, and the donated to a local church. Stehlin said coaches and members of the wrestling team matched the canned goods collection by doing 185 push-ups after the match.
