Lady Hurricane tames Taylor 9-1 in tourney opener

NORTH BEND — Olivia Veidt scattered eight hits on the mound and had three hits at the plate Wednesday as Wilmington defeated Taylor 9-1 in a Div. II sectional softball game at Taylor.

The victory puts the Lady Hurricane into the second round of the tournament to face Goshen 5 p.m. Thursday at the WHS diamond. There is a $5 admission charge for the OHSAA tournament game.

“Proud of the girls for being ready to play today,” said WHS coach Glen Blessing. “We were able to get on the board early which is always good. Madi (Flint) made a heck of a play catching a fly in right field and throwing the girl out at home in the first inning. That really set the tone for our defense today. The girls hit the ball well today too and kept pressure on their defense. Taylor has a nice team with a strong and young group of girls.”

Courtney Smart had two hits and drove in two runs. Kendra McKenna also drove in two runs and Sophie Blessing also had two hits.
