5-1 loss to Mason ends WHS baseball season

MASON —The Wilmington High School baseball team was defeated by Mason 5-1 Thursday in a Division I sectional game at Mason High School.

The loss ends the Hurricane season at 14-7.

Mason, 18-7 on the year, will play for a sectional title next week.

Brett Bell went the distance on the mound for the Hurricane, allowing six hits and four walks in six innings. He struck out three and only one of the runs allowed as earned.

Mason put three runs on the board in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. In the fifth, Wilmington committed three errors on defense.

WHS made it 5-1 in the sixth, but exited the inning feeling like more runs were possible.

“We left bases loaded in the sixth inning,” WHS coach Dusty James said. “We had runners on first and second with one out in the third and seventh and were unable to get them in. Mason has a very good team with really good pitching. Most of the time a team strikes out 13 times and commits five errors, you’re going to lose.”

Ryan Hottinger, Zach Wyrick and Chris Wolary recorded the only hits for the Hurricane. Wyrick also walked. Stephen Krause, Alex Meyer and Bell all walked. Hottinger scored the lone run on a Chris Wolary single. Wilmington struck out 13 times in the game.

“The kids fought hard and battled, but we just didn’t make the plays we needed to,” James said. “Bell has been our ‘3’ but has pitched big for us all season, and he did that again for us tonight. I was very proud of his performance. It is really tough to say goodbye to these seniors — Drew Carey, Ryan Hottinger, Chad Davis, Chris Wolary, Tyler Wells and Josh Piechocki. Every player has their time, but it is tough to lose such a great group of guys all together.”
