Wilmington celebrated its 2015 Homecoming with a 49-7 conquest of visiting Hillsboro in South Central Ohio League football action at Alumni Field.
The Hurricane (4-1) improves to 2-0 in the SCOL.
Perhaps riding the wave of emotion of a Homecoming kickoff at a renovated Alumni Field, Wilmington exploded with 28 first quarter points and never looked back.
But Hillsboro actually tied the game at 7-7 in the first period. The Hurricane, however, then scored the next 42 points.
WHS head coach Scott Killen, although happy with the victory, feels there is still work to be done for his squad.
“We did a lot of good things tonight and put a lot of points on the board, but there is still a lot of football that remains and we need to keep getting better,” Killen said. “I would say after five games we are to improving and we are pleased with where we are at, but there is other things that we need to work on. We have to take it week by week and prepare for East Clinton who has improved and they will play hard all four quarters. We came out clicking tonight and we executed some big plays, which I’m happy about.”
Wilmington scored on its opening drive covering 44 yards as Cam Stewart reached paydirt at the 9:57 mark and Brady Henry tacked on the PAT.
Hillsboro, however, responded with a scoring drive of its own capped off by quarterback Hunter Chain on a 6 yard dive into the corner of the end zone and kicker Deon Burns connected on the PAT to tie the game at 7-7.
Wilmington came right back with three quick touchdowns — a rush by quarterback Matt Creditt, a pass reception by Brad Keller and a pass reception by Dylan Beaugard of 71 yards —giving the Hurricane a commanding 28-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Creditt picked up his second touchdown of the night with just over 4:00 remaining in the half on a nifty 67-yard run.
DJ Ames came up with a super defensive play — a diving interception at the 6 — stopping a potential scoring drive for the Indians.
Again capitalizing on a big play Wilmington added another touchdown by Creditt who scored from 18 yards out and Henry’s PAT made it a 42-7 lead.
Wilmington closed out the scoring with a 93-yard pass play from Creditt to Brady McCune who raced down the Hurricane sideline to paydirt with 2:23 to play in the quarter. Henry tacked on the PAT extending the lead to 49-7. It was McCune’s first game back from injury.
Sophomore Sloan Marsh of Wilmington recovered a fumble with 3:54 remaining to stop a potential Hillsboro scoring drive at the 33.
Wilmington remains at Alumni Field hosting East Clinton Astros in a battle of county rivals next Friday night.
