Lady ’Cane opens with 2-1 win over Lady Falcons

ADAMS TOWNSHIP — Katlyn Jamiel scored 41 seconds into the second half Tuesday as Wilmington held off Clinton-Massie 2-1 in a Southern Buckeye Athletic & Academic Conference girls soccer match at Frank Irelan Field.

The match was the first for both teams.

Karlie Morgan, the WHS goalkeeper, thwarted several Lady Falcons scoring opportunities in the second half to keep the Lady Hurricane margin intact.

“Karlie Morgan keeps getting better at becoming the 11th field player as well as the keeper,” said WHS assistant coach Kenny Ferrence, who took over the team following a red card to head coach Kerry Lewis late in the first half.

Emily Ireland gave Clinton-Massie a 1-0 lead but Jamiel rocked a long shot over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Julieana Hay to tie the match with 24:29 to play in the first half.

“The first half we had an even match,” Ferrence said. “The second half we calmed down and played the ball with a purpose. Rushing was to a minimum and speed of play became essential for the win.”

After the halftime break, Wilmington was awarded a penalty kick and Jamiel made good on the opportunity to put the Lady Hurricane on top.
