WILMINGTON – The East Clinton tennis team won the SBAAC National Division post-season tournament Wednesday on the Wilmington High School tennis courts.
Led by a trio of bracket champions, the Lady Astros cruised to the tournament championship. Shelby Michael at second singles and Sydney Michael at third singles were both champions for EC while the first doubles team of Bella Walters and Haley Harrell won their bracket.
Korie White and Alexis Vestal were second at first doubles for Blanchester while Kayla Allen and Grace King were second at second doubles.
Despite four regular season league matches still to be played, Blanchester will win its seventh consecutive SBAAC National Division title.
The Ladycats finished third in the league tournament. The regular season title is good for 18 points for the champion. East Clinton can earn 14 points as runnerup by winning its final two matches.
The Astros outscored Blanchester 9-6 in the league tournament but would still trailed BHS by a point in the overall standings.
“It wasn’t our best day but there is a reason the league title is decided over an entire season and not based on one day,” BHS coach Matt Sexton said. “We did what we needed to do in the regular season to give ourselves some margin. So we’re not going to feel bad about a tough day at the tournament. I give all the credit to my girls for working hard and finding a way, somehow, to keep pulling off matches. It says a lot about their character.
“Seven (titles) in a row is honestly just ridiculous. I’m so proud of the kids for being able to finish it off.”
