MT ORAB – Karlie Morgan’s third straight shutout lifted Wilmington to a 2-0 win over Western Brown in SBAAC American Division girls soccer action Tuesday night.

“Wow, to shut-out Massie, New Richmond and Western Brown back-to-back-to-back is special,” WHS head coach Kerry Lewis said. “Can’t say enough about our back line.”

Lewis noted the defensive play of center-back Sophie Burt, outside-back Claire Greenlees, center-back Suzannah Johns, outside-back Ashley Tissot and outside-back Bradeanna Arehart.

Johns’ effort was noteworthy as she moved to center-back from her normal outside-back because of the absence of Jenna Victor.

“The two positions are very different; Suzannah adjusted to the new role very well,” said Lewis.

Wilmington improves to 7-5-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the American Division. WHS is 5-1-1 in its last seven matches.

Western Brown drops to 6-6-1 overall and 3-4 in the division.

Katlyn Jamiel scored both Wilmington goals, with Jasmine Jamiel and Paige Bryant getting credit for assists, Lewis said.

“We’ve had some really good strikers at WHS over the years, but we’ve never had a player that can separate from her defender at will like Kate can,” Lewis said. “Kate’s first two steps are so explosive that defenders can’t keep pace. And that’s exactly what Katlyn did on first goal. She took two explosive steps past defender creating just enough separation then buried the opening goal.”

Lewis also said Petra Bray “is a fighter and relentless getting to the ball” from her defensive center-mid position.
