Fairfield baseball edges East Clinton 2-1

LEESBURG – Fairfield scored two unearned runs with two outs in the fourth and edged East Clinton 2-1 Saturday in non-league baseball action.

“We played another great game but didn’t take advantage of some opportunities we were given,” EC coach Brian Carey said. “Some base running mistakes and mental mistakes came back to haunt us in the end.”

Justin Smith was the tough-luck losing pitcher. He gave up just three hits.

“Justin pitched a great game and did his job,” Carey said. “Leesburg played a good, clean game and I tip my hat to them.”

The Astros had five consecutive batters reach base in the fourth but failed to score.

Smith stole home in the seventh inning for EC’s only run of the game.
