AKRON – Wilmington College freshman Katie Hughes led the Fightin’ Quakers performance at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Akron University Saturday.

Hughes, a Clinton-Massie High School graduate, placed 172nd with a time of 24:53.6. Savannah Rhodes, a Blanchester High School grad, was next to cross the finish line, doing so in 25:27.7 for 208th place.

Next to finish for Wilmington was Allison Helmke and Kelly Rice, completing the six-kilometer course just two spots from one another. Helmke recorded a time of 27:23.5 while Rice tallied a mark of 27:40.8. Kendra Stahl rounded out the Quakers’ top five finishers with a time of 27:57.4.

As a team, Wilmington placed 33rd out of 39 teams.

“Today was a tough environment for a young and inexperienced team,” WC coach Ron Combs said. “We are getting better and will see some of the DIII teams we competed against today in a few weeks.”

Wilmington will compete again Friday at the Eagle Invitational in Warrenville, Ill.
