BEREA – The Wilmington College men’s swim team won seven events en route to a season-opening victory over Baldwin Wallace, 131-94, Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.

“Both teams swam really well for the first meet,” said Wilmington head coach Trip Breen. “We didn’t swim overly nervous. Everyone was excited to race.”

Senior David Hawk (Mount Gilead, OH/Edison) and junior David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) each tallied two individual wins, while junior Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) recorded an individual event win and was part of relay victory.

Freshman Andrew Stewart (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie) was second in the 50 (21.97) and the 100 (50.87), while sophomore Carter Semenchuk (Rockford, IL/Hononegah) was third in the 50 (22.33) and 100 (52.35).

Hawk, a reigning three-time OAC champion, started the season where he finished last season by winning the 50 freestyle (21.97) and the 100 freestyle (48.72). Wilmington dominated the freestyle events as the Fightin’ Quakers claimed the top three spots in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, and claimed the top two spots in the 200 freestyle.

David Spraul was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:51.54) and the 100 backstroke (54.65). Freshman Andrew Haga (Gahanna, OH/Westerville South) won the 100 butterfly (57.61), while sophomore Hayes Tillapaugh (Wilmington, OH/Wickenburg, Ariz.) was second (58.28).

Freshman Matt Kitze (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) turned in a great performance, according to Breen, placing second in the 1000 (11:06.51).

The 200 freestyle relay team of Erik Spraul, Semenchuk, Stewart and Brendon Tirado (Dayton, OH/Oakwood) won the event with the time of 1:31.50.

Wilmington hosts Ohio Northern 6 p.m. Friday in OAC action.
