BEREA, Ky. – Unable to hold a five-point lead with 25 seconds remaining, the Wilmington College men’s basketball team lost in overtime to Berea, 87-85, Sunday in non-conference action.

A pair of missed free throws and a missed box out enabled the Mountaineers to score the final five points of regulation. After the offensive rebound with 15 seconds left and a timeout, Berea hit a jumper with seven seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

“I thought they were a very physical basketball team, and that time, they decided to let a couple calls go,” said Wilmington head coach K.C. Hunt. “Quite honestly, we missed nine straight free throws. It wasn’t because of one box out; we have to make a couple free throws to win the game.

“As I told them after the game, every player that went to the line in a position to clinch the game hadn’t been there before in their college career. It’s an experience that we need to now have under our belt, and the next time, we will do better.”

Wilmington is now 0-2 when games enter the extra period, and 1-3 overall.

The Fightin’ Quakers shot just 50 percent (14-of-28) from the free throw line, while Berea marched to the line 40 times – making 30 (75 percent).

WC trailed by as much as 12 in the first half, and it was a pair of reserve players that enabled the Fightin’ Quakers to get back in the game. Freshmen Kevin Lewis (Cincinnati, OH/Clark Montessori) and Jordan Hecker (Delaware, OH/Rutherford B. Hayes) combined for 29 points off the bench.

“I thought we had some really good individual performances today, but at the end of the day, we are going to have to be a total team whether it Kevin or Jordan or whoever,” said Hunt. “The way they are calling the game, from a foul standpoint, we were in serious foul trouble with 18 minutes remaining in the second half.”

Hecker eventually fouled out and four of WC’s five starters all finished with four fouls as 29 of the game’s 51 fouls were called against the Quakers.

Four different players reached double figures led by Lewis’ career-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting with a career-high and team-leading six boards. Hecker was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field for 13 points. Sophomore Christian Jones (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton) and freshman Andrew Russell (Columbus, OH/Central Crossing) each added 11 points for Wilmington.

Wilmington plays its first home game of the season, hosting Capital 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
