WILMINGTON — Fairs in the Midwest are famous for their fried foods, ranging from green tomatoes to Oreo cookies and everywhere in-between. But one concession stand at the Clinton County Fair claims a unique edible you can’t find at many other fairs — the Tacorito.
Jana Davis, who runs Curtis Concessions with her husband Randy, said her parents, Jim and Sarah Curtis, were the inventors of the original Tacorito — the ingredients of a taco, burrito-wrapped in an elephant ear modified by a secret ingredient.
“If we told you, it wouldn’t be a secret,” Jana Davis said.
Tacoritos can be ordered with beef, chicken or as a chicken-bacon-ranch combination.
So far, the chicken Tacorito is the biggest seller, Davis said.
While the Davis family has been running the booth for nearly 30 years, Davis said her parents started the booth in the 1970s.
Since then, Curtis Concessions has traveled to many county fairs, festivals and events selling deep-fried elephant ears, funnel cakes and, of course, Tacoritos.
Jana Davis teaches language arts at Clinton-Massie Middle School, and Randy Davis works at R+L Truck Parts. They have two children, and live in Wilmington.
“It’s a family effort,” Jana Davis said.
