5K fundraiser Saturday for mission trip

A 5K race fundraiser is planned for Saturday morning, Aug. 1 at the J.W. Denver Williams Jr. Memorial Park in Wilmington.

The event is a fundraiser for Josh Speelman of Wilmington who plans to participate in a Christian mission trip to 11 countries as part of The World Race nonprofit organization. According to The World Race’s website at theworldrace.org, “The World Race is a stretching journey into 11 countries in 11 months to serve ‘the least of these’ while amongst real and raw community.”

Speelman is a 2008 Wilmington High School graduate. He is a son of Larry Speelman, pastor at the A Street Church of God in Wilmington, and of Lynn Ashby.

Registration for the 5K race starts 7:30 a.m. Saturday and the race itself begins at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $25 per participant. There will be music, food and prizes after the race.
