Chillicothe gains upper hand in SCOL tennis

Chillicothe took control of the South Central Ohio League tennis standings with a 3-2 win over Wilmington Tuesday night on the WHS courts.

“We are disappointed with losing, but not ashamed of our play,” said WHS coach Doug Cooper. “We split with them last year and we have every chance to split with them again this year, too. We both lost one senior from last year and everyone else is back. We will get our chance to even the score.”

Allison Brooks won her school-record 73rd high school match at first singles. Marci Sodini is the previous WHS record holder for most wins by a member of the girls tennis team at WHS.

Cooper said the decisive match was at third singles where Madeline Diggs outlasted Wilmington’s Katie Schroeder in a near-three hour battle. Cooper said, “As Chillicothe coach Janet Disbennett said after the match ‘We knew it would be a dog fight.’”

“It was a heart-breaking loss for Katie; it seemed like both players deserved to win that match,” the WHS coach said.

Mai Cooper “continues to raise the level of her play each time out,” coach Cooper said.

Wilmington has one league loss while the Lady Cavaliers are unbeaten in league play.
