BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Wilmington College men’s soccer team lost a pair of games this weekend at the Birmingham Southern Classic.

On Sunday, Millsaps defeated the Quakers 4-1. On Friday, WC, now 1-2 on the year, was defeated 1-0 by Birmingham Southern.

On Sunday, freshman Niklas Martensson scored the team’s only goal in the 78th minutes from a feed from sophomore Nils Asteberg.

Both teams launched nine shots and both teams committed nine fouls, while Millsaps held the advantage with shots on goal, 7-4.

On Friday, Birmingham Southern scored less than two minutes into the second overtime to snap a scoreless tie.

“We really played well, especially with team defending,” said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. “I thought we had several dangerous scoring threats, but BSC did a great job of not allowing us to get behind them. It was very disappointing to give up a goal on a set-piece free kick. We had a lot of the play, but did not capitalize on the chances we created.”

The Fightin’ Quakers’ defense was stout for the majority of the game and didn’t allow a single shot on goal until the game’s 96th minute. While Wilmington’s defense was keeping the Panthers from presenting any dangerous chances, WC had six shots on goal in the first 100 minutes.
