Cardboard City, drone set for Saturday

This year’s Cardboard City, the main fundraiser for the Clinton County Homeless Shelter, will be at the southeast corner parking lot on courthouse square in Wilmington.

The event will feature a new activity — organizers hope enough people show at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 to form a human chain of hands around the sidewalk on the courthouse block. There will be a drone to photograph the human chain from above.

After being located at the municipal parking lot off Locust Street, Cardboard City is moving to the employee lot, which is larger, next to the Clinton County Courthouse. The adjacent part of Walnut Street between Main and Sugartree streets will be blocked off for the 6 p.m. Sept. 19 to 5 a.m. Sept. 20 Cardboard City event.

Funds for the local homeless shelter are raised through pledge amounts from participants. But people don’t have to stay all night in cardboard boxes to stop by and see the cardboard houses and the “canstruction” projects, or see a late-night movie and have pizza prior to participants retiring to their cardboard homes by midnight.

For those who want to donate to the fundraiser but not sleep outside, they can send a check made payable to Clinton County Homeless Shelter and mail it to Cardboard City 2015, c/o 253 Linkhart Road, Wilmington, OH 45177. Registration forms can be found on the shelter’s website www.clintoncountyhomelessshelter.com and its Facebook page.

Cardboard City is organized and sponsored by the Wilmington A.M. Rotary Club.

UMC sets ‘Conversations That Matter’ TED Talk

The Wilmington United Methodist Church will kick off a monthly series of “Conversations That Matter” on Monday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in at the church. Community members are invited to gather to see a video of a nationally renowned speaker deliver a “TED Talk” on a topic which impacts our community and communities around the world.

Structured table conversations and refreshments will follow the presentations which range from 10 minutes to 20 minutes in length. Topics will include peacemaking, race, diversity, health care, education, poverty, drug abuse, and gun violence. Starting in October, “Conversations That Matter” will be held on the third Thursday of each month.

The first TED Talk will feature 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi on the topic, “How to make peace? Get angry!” How did a young man born into a high caste in India come to free 83,000 children from slavery? The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate offers a surprising piece of advice to anyone who wants to change the world for the better: Get angry at injustice.

Pet adoptions, activities at Tractor Supply

The Tractor Supply Co. store in Wilmington will host activities for families and their pets, including pet adoptions, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 as part of Pet Appreciation Week. Pet Appreciation Week, or P.A.W., is Tractor Supply’s annual event to celebrate pet owners and their furry friends.

“There’s a vast number of healthy dogs and cats just waiting to be adopted, and Pet Appreciation Week is our chance to help these pets find homes,” said Carl Allen, manager of the Wilmington store. “By partnering with our great local nonprofits, we’re able to match families with great pets and help those families start pet ownership on the right foot — or paw.”

As part of the main event on Sept. 19, Tractor Supply will feature pet adoptions, demonstrations on pet nutrition, drawings for $200 worth of gift cards, and giveaways, including tennis balls and pet food mats while supplies last.

All Pet Appreciation Week events are open to the public — and pets — and will take place at Tractor Supply at 1627 Rombach Avenue, Suite B.

In addition to finding good homes for dogs and cats, Saturday’s adoption events will also raise awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering pets and provide information on proper pet care and nutrition.

Several activities will take place during the main event, including Pet Adoption and Bake Sale.

Community partner for this year’s Pet Appreciation Week include is A 2nd Chance Pet Adoptions.

Contact the Tractor Supply store at 937-382-2595 for pet adoption details and other planned activities.
