The Wilmington High School boys golf team swept a South Central Ohio League quad match Wednesday at the Chillicothe Country Club.

The Hurricane, having never seen the course, came in with a 188 while Miami Trace shot 189, McClain 192 and Chillicothe 239.

“I was a little nervous before the match, as I did not know what to expect,” said coach Phil Gilmore. “We had no game plan for the course, but what we did know is that the course was going to be a challenge off the tee and the greens would be a tough test and we answered the bell.”

With the wins, Wilmington is 5-8 overall and 5-7 in the SCOL.

“I am so proud of the kids and they had a great attitude the entire round, embracing the fact that they had to learn the course, especially since our conference tournament is there next weekend,” said Gilmore.

Hunter DeWeese led the Hurricane with a 43 and Dylan Combs shot a 44.

“It was nice to see Dylan finally post a score that would put a smile on his face. He has had a rough season, and hes starting to come out of the golf funk,” Gilmore added.

Derrick Cope came in with a 50 and Tristan Reiley came in with a 51. Playing but not scoring were Cameron Smart with a 51 and Drew Carey with a 55. Playing but not scoring were Smart and Combs.

On Saturday at the Christoff Invitational at Springfield’s Reid Memorial North Golf Course, Wilmington was 15th out of 21 teams with a 387. Springfield Shawnee won the 18-hole event with a 328.

DeWeese again led the Hurricane with a 93 while Combs carded a 96, Carey a 97 and Smart a 101. Reiley played but did not score for WHS.
