’Cats, Broncos meet a year after 60-57 shootout

The Blanchester football team gets into Southern Buckeye Conference play but not National Division play.

The Wildcats (0-3) head to Mount Orab Friday night to face Western Brown (2-1). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Western Brown may not be the best team in the SBC, but it is the highest-scoring team. The Broncos average more than 42 points a game.

“Western Brown is a very good offensive team,” said BHS coach Jack O’Rourke. “Their defense is an attacking style and is very solid. We are just taking one game at a time. Western Brown is a good opponent and it should be an exciting game.”

The 2014 version of this matchup was certainly exciting. The epic 60-57 shootout featured a monster performance by WB quarterback Chaiten Tomlin, who returns. Tomlin was 23-for-38 passing for 387 yards and six touchdowns. He also had 15o yards and one touchdown on nine rushing attempts.

Both teams were prolific offensively. They combined for 1,067 yards of offense, with Blanchester rushing for 480 and Western Brown passing for 387.

Blanchester seems capable of repeating those numbers but only if the offensive play becomes more consistent and eliminates turnovers.

“We are becoming more consistent in our play,” said O‘Rourke. “We still need to do a better job in pass protection and taking care of the football. We need to cause more turnovers.”

O’Rourke said he’s been pleased with the play of quarterback Jared Monhollan. He is one of five players who have taken snaps from scrimmage for the Wildcats this season because of injury.

“Jared has done a consistent job in filling in at quarterback,” O’Rourke said.

The BHS coach also has been pleased with is run defense’s steady improvement.
