WILMINGTON — There’s a storm of school spirit picking up momentum at Wilmington High School, and it’s expected to stir up the Hurricane by week’s end as WHS students begin celebrating Homecoming 2015.
Students have been planning for weeks for the float building, spirit days, homecoming parade, king and queen, and football game that will honor and celebrate the heritage of the Orange and the Black, Home of the Hurricane, Wilmington High School.
Students kicked off this week’s celebration with the theme of “Sea Side Paradise” when, early Monday morning, they united for Twin Day and dressed alike from head to toe. It’s a Tacky Tuesday as students model one-of-a-kind outfits that any other day would be considered fashion faux pas. On Wednesday students will pay special attention to higher learning and don their favorite College Day apparel, and on Thursday students will enjoy the final days of summer dressed for the Sea Side Paradise Beach and resting up for Friday’s Spirit Day, in which a sea of orange and black is sure to make some serious waves.
Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are spending their evenings in hiding this week building floats to enter in Thursday evening’s annual Homecoming Parade that will roll out of the WHS’s parking lot at 6:30 and travel through downtown Wilmington. Community members serving as judges will be strategically spaced throughout the parade route making notes and deciding which float will take top honors.
The WHS Athletic Boosters, who sponsor the parade, will award $100 to the graduating class whose float takes first place, $75 to the second place winner and $50 and $25 to the class floats coming in third and fourth. The boosters also provide the flowers and plaque for the homecoming court and will sponsor a tee shirt sale and raffle at the homecoming game.
Following the parade, Hurricane fans will gather at WHS’s Alumni Field for the annual Homecoming Pep Rally. Student council members, who organized the event, will present the Homecoming Court and announce the 2015 King and Queen. Cheerleaders will lead the crowd and a rumble of Hurricane pride will fill the stands as the Wilmington community rallies behind the WHS football team as they prepare to take on the Hillsboro Indians in Friday night’s football game.
Students will gather again Saturday evening in the high school auditeria for the Homecoming Dance where the Homecoming King and Queen, their royal court and subjects, will dance the night away at Sea Side Paradise.
Members of this year’s homecoming court include WHS seniors Bryah Arehart, Drezden Beam, Isabelle Thomas, Kyerston Miller, Mai Cooper, Ty Snarr, Bryant Bergeferd, Matt Keiter, Alex Miller and Ryan Oates.
