Two of Ohio’s premier small-school football programs will square off during the regular season beginning in the 2017 season.

“I think it’s awesome for our program to play another program the caliber of Coldwater,” said CM head coach Dan McSurley. “There’s no other program that has dominated the state of Ohio in football over the past 15 years.”

Clinton-Massie and Coldwater will meet Sept. 1, 2017 at Frank Irelan Field in week 2 of the regular season.

The Falcons will travel north to Coldwater for a meeting the following year.

“This keeps our younger players motivated to continue to work hard in the off-season and keep the program hungry,” said McSurley. “Hopefully this game will also motivate our district to provide the facility and seating to hold this event. This could very easily be the most attended game in Ohio on that particular week.

“The revenue that this contest will generate will be huge for our entire athletic program which effects hundreds of student-athletes at Massie.”

Clinton-Massie and Coldwater do have a football history. The two teams met in the 2007 Div. IV Region 16 championship game at Welcome Stadium.

“I think back to the game in ’07 and how much we are a program grew,” McSurley said. “That experience helped us in so many ways. That Coldwater team went on to upset a Mooney team that was ranked 4th nationally.”

Coldwater dominated (63-14) a Massie team that had just one loss to that point, and that was a one-point game at Washington Court House’s Gardner Park.

At this time, Clinton-Massie athletic director Cindy Running said the Falcons do not have a varsity football opponent for week 2 of the 2016 season.

“We are looking for a one-year contract for week 2,” she said.

Clinton-Massie will play at Springfield Shawnee in week 3 next year then Shawnee will visit Massie for the 2017 game in week 3.
