In praise of tropical breezes

With a theme of “Seaside Paradise,” the floats and parade units were appropriately bathed in sunshine Thursday evening for the annual Wilmington City Schools Homecoming Parade. Participants — and there were many — made use of sunglasses, nose sunblocks, beach towels, inflatable or handmade palm trees, Hawaiian leis, beach balls, and, well you get the tropical island picture.

The Wilmington High School 2015 Homecoming king and queen are Alex Miller and Isabelle Thomas. The announcements came during a Thursday night pep rally at newly refurbished Alumni Field. Homecoming parade Grand Marshal Tim Martin spoke at the rally, focusing on having pride in school and oneself.

Longtime Wilmington City Schools’ (WCS) educator Tim Martin, left wearing a block W cap, enjoys the ride as the 2015 grand marshal of the WCS homecoming parade. Convertibles and long flat-bed trailers were just the things for Thursday’s parade, so that Martin and other participants were easily seen and could say hi, often knowing the spectators’ names.

That’s a dark, foreboding hurricane at the front of the float, right, causing waves to crash on an otherwise “Seaside Paradise.”
