Clinton County health inspections find health hazards

WILMINGTON — The following information is obtained from the Clinton County Health Department and is compiled from inspection reports.

Violations are either critical or non-critical. Critical violations are more likely to contribute to food contamination, illness or an environmental health hazard, including inadequate cooking of food items or poor personal hygiene.

The following restaurants or food service establishments were inspected recently:

• Tom’s Express, 7529 Fairground Road, Blanchester, September 10, standard inspection. Staff weren’t adequately trained and knowledgeable of food safety practices. Food items stored out of original packaging didn’t have common-name labels. Packages of ice cream cones were stored on the floor. Containers of strawberries for ice cream toppings missing date info. Thermometer unavailable in Nesquick cooler. Cup of soft serve in retail freezer missing labels. Test strips for sanitizer solution unavailable. Light in doors of walk-in cooler need repair and light bulbs weren’t working. Black residues observed on inner shield in ice making machine. Protective coating needs peeled off of ice machine. Cleaning frequency must meet time frames. Floor tile missing and damaged. Ceiling lights not working. Paint peeling. Old coconut halves and other items attracting gnats in back room. Clutter and excess storage in back room. Extra shelves stored outside building. Mops on floor.

• Wilmington Bowling Center, 2667 State Route 22/3, Wilmington, September 4, standard. Sanitizer test strips unavailable. Light bulb not working in reach-in freezer and ice accumulated in it. Pink and black residues observed on inner guard of ice machine and water drink cooler’s spout. Hot water unavailable at hand sink. Back storage room cluttered and unorganized.

• Laurel Oaks Cafeteria, 300 Oak Drive, Wilmington, September 9, standard. Light bulb not working in vent hood above ovens. Heat bulb not working in hot display equipment. Fan not working in walk-in freezer.

• Save-A-Lot, 127 S. Broadway St., Blanchester, September 10, standard. Surface storing meat department scale and label maker deteriorating. Ice accumulated on walk-in freezer’s main door. Floor tile damaged.

• Alkermes, 265 Olinger Circle, Wilmington, September 11, standard. Boxes of food stored on walk-in freezer’s floor. Several items weren’t stored at cold enough temperatures. Thermometer unavailable. Light not working in vent hood. Grout missing between floor tiles in kitchen.

• Wilmington College Snack Bar, 251 Ludovie St., Pyle Center, Wilmington, September 15, standard. Ice scoop holder accumulated debris. Black residues on soda fountain ice dispenser. Food residues and accumulations were on several surfaces. Plastic wrap and French fry bags stored under sink with open plumbing. Mops stored on floor.

• Wilmington College Dining Hall, Pyle Center, Wilmington, September 15, standard. Bulk dry ingredients stored in containers missing labels. Boxes and containers of food stored on the floor. Cookies and sprinkles not protected from consumers by sneeze guards, lids or otherwise. Plastic utensils in to-go areas allows contact with food surface. Thermometer missing. Some packaged food items missing proper labels. Butter wasn’t kept cold enough. Waffle mix wasn’t under temperature control. Cloth towels used. Frozen yogurt soft-serve machine wasn’t cleaned every 24 hours. Window without screen was open. Heavy dust accumulations on ceiling tiles, fronts of vent hoods, HVAC vents, warewash machines and other surfaces. Grout missing. Ceiling lights not working. Floor tile missing and damaged. A portion of the report detailing other violations was illegible.

• General Denver Hotel, 81 W. Main St., Wilmington, September 16, standard. Several items weren’t stored cold enough. Microwave in salad prep area has damage/peeling to internal surfaces. Food debris residues observed on a wall.
