The Wilmington High School boys soccer team defeated Fayetteville 3-2 Saturday at Fayetteville in a non-league match.

“It’s never easy to come away with a win at Fayetteville,” WHS coach Imad El-Macharrafie said. “In the first half our guys still had not woken up. In the second half we put the pieces together and buried two goals in the back of the net. Being a great team is about being consistent. In the second half our intensity and a little bit of luck allowed us to find the back of the net and come away with the win.”

Sam Spirk had three goals with assists to Charlie Schumacher, Seth Gundlach and Ethan Powell.

Wilmington is 10-3-1 on the year.

On Thursday, the Hurricane lost to Chillicothe 7-1 in a South Central Ohio League match.

“Chillicothe has the best soccer program in the SCOL,” said El-Macharrafie. “We owe them a lot of respect. Unfortunately our team did not rise to the occasion and play with a chip on their shoulder, which is what you need to have when you play great teams and, in fact, beat great teams.”

Spirk again had the goal for WHS with Schumacher recording another assist.

On Oct. 5, Wilmington and Lynchburg tied 0-0 in a non-league battle.

“Lynchburg is a top quality team,” El-Macharrafie said. “All their boys were ready to play from the start and so were ours. Even though we tied, it was the best game I’ve seen our guys play all season, as far as sticking to the game plan, playing with confidence, chemistry and know-how. Early chances were left unfinished but we didn’t let up on defense.”

Despite the lackluster offensive performance, Wilmington escaped a loss thanks to the play of goalkeeper Kaden Laufer.

“Kaden played the game of his career,” the WHS coach said. “We are fortunate to have him.”
