Due to a threat of rain on the night of Cardboard City, most of the judging of the CANstruction creations was held Monday at the sites of three organizations: MB Financial Bank in Wilmington, Wilmington United Methodist Church and the Wilmington Church of God. Laurel Oaks went ahead and assembled their entry Sept. 17 during Cardboard City. This year’s theme was Pokémon. Winning first was the Wilmington Church of God, above. In the CANstruction contest, teams build themed structures out of can goods and box goods that later are donated to the Clinton County Homeless Shelter’s food pantry.
From left, Jim Burge and Fadi Al-Ghawi were judges of an eight-foot tall cell phone and a hand at MB Financial Bank in Wilmington in the CANstruction contest. The MB Financial Bank entry included fingers made of packaged rice, cereal behind the blue paper sky, the clouds are bags of marshmallows and toward the bottom are toiletries, can goods with green wrappers (for grass) next to green soda pop boxes and white boxes of crackers. MB Financial finished a close second in the competition. Cardboard City Committee member Kathy Johnson said she hopes more businesses get involved next year in CANstruction.
