Stith leads Quakers against Thomas More

Griffin Stith was the overall race winner Friday as the Wilmington College cross country team hosted its first meet of the season.

Wilmington competed on Friday at home in a dual meet against Thomas More College. This meet was the first on the WC home course this season. The team raced a 5k, a distance they haven’t seen in competition since the Red Wolf Rumble on Sept. 2. The men finished 21 points behind Thomas More.

Junior Griffin Stith, who finished first for the Quakers in the Louisville Classic 8k last week, was first overall with a time of 16:33.6.

“It was a good win for Griffin,” WC head coach Ron Combs said. “I thought we were good through the third position, but we have to be better at four and five if we are going to be a competitive team. It was fun to run a dual meet. It felt very old school.”

Sophomore Rick Pride clocked in with a time of 17:03.8 for sixth, followed closely by junior Cameron Erwin who finished seventh with a time of 17:21.9.

Sophomore Matt Baker was the next finisher for Wilmington, finishing 10th with a time of 17:56.6. Elliott Phillimore, Jeff Clydesdale, and Gage Egner rounded out the finishes for the Quakers. They clocked in with times of 18:17.1 for 12th for Phillimore, 18:30.1 for 13th for Clydesdale, and 19:36.5 for 16th for Egner.

The Fightin’ Quakers will host and compete in the JennaStrong Fall Classic Oct. 14. The invitational begins at 4:30 p.m. with the women’s race with the men’s race slated to begin at 5:15 p.m.
