WC men’s soccer slump continues at Marietta

MARIETTA – The Wilmington College men’s soccer team allowed a goal in each half and fell to Marietta Saturday, 2-0, in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Marietta Field.

“We had a good game plan, but we are struggling right now,” said Wilmington head coach Bud Lewis. “We didn’t score on our chances and they did.”

Wilmington has now lost seven of the last eight games and has scored just two goals during the skid.

With Wilmington seemingly holding its own, another injury to an already depleted back line allowed Marietta to gain some confidence. The Pioneers dominated for 10 minutes, according to Lewis, and it finally paid off with a goal in the 29th minute.

Marietta added its second goal less than two minutes into the second half for the final score.

Sophomore Niklas Martennson had two of Wilmington’s five shots. Senior Nick Baker had three saves on five shots.

Wilmington (4-8-2 overall, 1-4 OAC) hosts No. 4 Ohio Northern (13-0-3 overall, 3-0-2 OAC) 7 p.m. Wednesday at Townsend Field.
