MOUNT ORAB — After building a big lead, Clinton-Massie had to hold off Western Brown Monday for a 41-30 non-league girls basketball victory at the WB gym.
The Lady Falcons are 3-2 on the year. The Lady Broncos are 0-3.
Madilyn Newton led all scorers with 12 points, six of those coming in the third quarter.
“Madilyn Newton had a heck of a ballgame at both ends of the floor,” CM coach Tim McGraw said.
The Lady Falcons cruised to an 11-3 first quarter lead with Sydney Leary dropping in four points.
But it was the Clinton-Massie that made the difference early in this one. Western Brown was held without a field goal the entire first half. Clinton-Massie led 20-7 at halftime.
The Lady Falcons kept the pressure on in the third, extending the lead to 31-13 by quarter’s end thanks to a strong effort by Newton.
However, McGraw lamented a “let down” on defense that allowed the Lady Broncos to “get back in the game.” Clinton-Massie was outscored 17-10 in the final period.
Faith Cottrell had five points in the fourth quarter for CMHS, connecting on three of four from the free throw line.
UP NEXT: Clinton-Massie will host Hillsboro Wednesday at the Lebanon Road gym. Reserve tipoff is set for a 5:30 p.m. start.
NON-LEAGUE FOR NOW: The two teams play non-league games now but beginning next season the two schools will be members of the American Division in the Southern Buckeye Athletic & Academic Conference.
