Nearly victim of a scam

0

My true but scary story …We have been warned about scams, especially elderly people called about a loved one being in trouble. I never thought I would be gullible enough to believe them. Wrong!

A young woman called me Saturday and said over and over that she was my oldest granddaughter Becky and she was in an accident and needed my help. She said someone would call me soon and explain; I should keep the line clear!

But thank goodness I used my cell phone and called my daughter in Warren County and asked if she had heard from Becky, who was supposed to have been in an auto accident. I would call her back when I knew more.

I got the expected call from someone who said I needed to to to Kroger and wire $1,900 for bond money, and as soon as they got the money, they would let Becky go home (she was supposedly being held because of her blood-alcohol level). A neighbor was going to take me; at 88, I don’t drive.

But before we left, my daughter called me back and said “Mom, don’t do anything! It is a hoax!” She said our Becky was out shopping.

I hope this keeps someone from making the mistake I almost made.
