CHILLICOTHE — Brandon Maughmer had 15 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter to lead Chillicothe to a 72-69 South Central Ohio League win over Clinton-Massie Tuesday night at the CHS gym.

With the game’s outcome in the balance in the final period, Maughmer hit 8 consecutive free throws to keep the Cavaliers on top.

Nick Chowning had 23 points for the Falcons while Trey Uetrecht finished with 17. Noah Greathouse tossed in 9 points.

In addition to Maughmer, Jordan Johnson scored 20 for the Cavs. Chillicothe had 11 three-pointers in the win, five by Johnson.

The Falcons fall to 0-3 on the year.

“We are on the edge (of winning), we just need to break through,” said CM coach Todd Cook. “We just need to get that first one. 0-3 is not a good feeling but any time you can come into the lockerroom and still be positive, once we get that first one we’ll be ready to go. We’ve been improving every day.

“Overall we are very disappointed with an 0-3 start but I saw humongous growth by our players. It was a very good team performance. They executed what we wanted to do and they worked their tails off.”

Both teams had a straight shooting eye in the first half. The Cavaliers hit 13 of 22 (59 percent) while Massie made 10 of 18 (55 percent). The Falcons trailed 36-29 at the intermission. Johnson led Chillicothe with 11 points. For Clinton-Massie, Chowning had 7 points and Uetrecht chipped in with 6. Daulton Wolfe had 5.

The Falcons made an early run in the third quarter, cutting the difference to 36-32 on Chowning’s breakout layup. It was 38-36 Chillicothe minutes later when Uetrecht hit a pair of free throws.

Johnson stemmed the tide for the Cavs with a three, then Brandon Maughmer came up with a steal and layup to quickly put the CHS lead back up 45-38.

Chowning — who had 16 points in the second half — provided a spark for Falcons offensively, scoring nine points in the third, including a three that made it 47-43. Griffin Cook’s layup brought CM within 47-45. The teams were to start anew when Thomas Myers converted an easy one to tie the game at 47-47.

Jason Benson broke the tie with a three. Noah Greathouse made a stickback in the final seconds of the third, 50-49.

On the first possession of the fourth, Wolfe scored on a second-chance basket to put Massie on top, 51-50. It was back and forth from there. Greathouse drained a three to give Massie a 57-56 advantage. A Greathouse basket brought CM to within 60-59.

But Maughmer hit a three-pointer then had a steal and layup as the Cavaliers grabbed a 65-61 lead. Uetrecht’s offensive rebound led to an old-fashioned three-point play as the Falcons continued to battle on the road, 65-64, with 1:58 to play.

The teams traded turnovers before Maughmer assisted on a basket then drained eight straight free throws to close out the win. In all, the Cavaliers made 10 of 13 from the line in the fourth.

Clinton-Massie will host Wilmington Friday night in an SCOL game.
