For the first time since joining the South Central Ohio League, the Wilmington High School boys bowling team defeated Hillsboro 2,463 to 2,266 Wednesday night at Royal Z Lanes.

For the WHS girls, Hillsboro came out on top in a close one, 2,169 to 1,999.

Sydney Shumaker had a season-best game of 177 for the Lady Hurricane. Chasity Asher had a 176 and Sarah Waln added a 171.

The Lady Hurricane had a season-high baker series of 508 with games of 168, 148 and 192.

“They bowled extremely well in the baker games,” WHS coach Chris Reiley said.

On the boys side, Donavon Brown and Tim Wright led the Hurricane charges — Brown with games of 213 and 223 and Wright with a 216.

“They really stepped up,” WHS coach Josh Fisher said. “Both have purchased new bowling balls in the last few weeks. The equipment change has really helped them out.”

Ryan Hottinger had a 206 game.

Wilmington had a 1,862 to 1,760 lead going into the baker games, an area the Hurricane has struggled in this season.

But on Wednesday, Wilmington had its season high baker trio with games of 187, 209 and 205.

“By far, it’s our best bakers,” Fisher said. “All the kids were rolling the ball pretty well. In a baker game, if you have just a couple kids off the mark, it can really cost you a game when they’re only bowling two frames each.

Fisher said three of Hillsboro’s bowlers averaged over 200 in the first round.

Wilmington is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the league. Hillsboro, the defending champions, also has one league loss. Clinton-Massie is leading the league.
