After fast start, Astros fade in 60-50 loss to Warriors

FRANKFORT — After a strong opening quarter, the wheels fell off for East Clinton in a 60-50 loss to Adena in a non-league boys basketball game at the AHS gym.

The Astros jumped out to a 14-3 first quarter advantage. Wyatt Floyd had 7 of his game-high 28 points in the opening period and Brendon Jenkins scored 5.

“Everything was going perfect,” EC coach Tony Berlin said. “What we did in the first quarter, that was a reflection of what we worked on in practice.”

In the wake of the 76-18 loss to McClain on Friday, the good start was pleasing for the EC faithful.

Then the quarter break came and things didn’t go so well in the second period. The Warriors outscored the Astros 17-5, led 20-19 at the half and never looked back.

East Clinton committed 7 turnovers in the second quarter, Berlin said. The Astros scored a total of 5 points in the second.

“We have to learn how to compete, learn how to win here,” said Berlin. “We have to learn how to get better every day (in practice).”

Floyd had just 1 point in the second but scored 8 in the third and 12 in the fourth in an attempt to carry the Astros to a victory.

“He bounced back for us tonight,” said Berlin.

Berlin added Jacob Olds and Cameron Conner also played hard for the Astros.

East Clinton (2-6 on the year) was short-handed in this one with Zach and Matt Mitchell out with injuries and Logan Kelly out because of an illness.

“The flu is going around,” Berlin said.

With the injuries and sickness, Berlin is OK with a break from the game schedule. East Clinton will not play again until Chillicothe visits Lees Creek on Jan. 6 for a South Central Ohio League game.

“Hopefully we can get everybody healthy,” the EC coach said.
