ADAMS TOWNSHIP — A stout defensive effort propelled Clinton-Massie to an easy 36-17 win Tuesday over New Richmond in a non-league girls basketball game at the Lebanon Road gym.

Clinton-Massie (5-4 on the year) held an early 13-5 lead but then New Richmond battled back in the second quarter to cut the difference to 15-14 at the half. The Lady Falcons hit on just 4 of 24 field goal attempts in the first half.

“We got out to a quick start and kind of hit a wall in the second quarter,” CM coach Tim McGraw said. “We missed several shots in the paint and New Richmond capitalized on that.”

Massie switched up its defense in the second half, going to a zone set, and stymied the Lady Lions at the offensive end. New Richmond had 3 points in the third quarter and did not score in the final period.

“Sydney Leary gave us great minutes and Johanna Theetge found her rhythm in the second half,” said McGraw. “Those two, along with Savannah Myers, did a great job on the glass.”

Clinton-Massie held a 29-21 advantage in rebounds with Myers grabbing 9 and Theetge hauling down 8.

Theetge led CM with 11 points while Leary had 9 points. Madilyn Newton scored just 2 but had 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals.

The Lady Falcons forced 26 turnovers. CM won despite making just 3 of 14 from the free throw line.

Clinton-Massie has a lengthy break before returning to action on Jan. 4 at McClain.
